I’m purchasing a new range and over the range microwave to replace an old one piece unit. Wallpaper currently covers the existing area behind the old unit. I think I’ll need something more durable in the open space above the new range. Tile would be great, but expensive and I’ve had no experience with that; tileboard might work if I can match/co-ordinate with existing countertop and wall laminate. Any suggestions?

I vote for tile; it is not difficult for me, and a small area would not be all that expensive. Tileboard is no where near as durable.
If you want to consider tile, read that topic on my website at http://www.bobf.info. You can set it directly on the drywall for a backsplash. Use latex modified thinset.

Tiling is heavy work, but a good skill for most homeowners to learn. And sure, it can be expensive, but not necessarily.

You might consider NOT trying to match existing tile. There have been lots of very impressive jobs where CONTRASTING tile is used above the range. It can make for a dramatic look–and since you won’t need much–it may not be as expensive as you think.

Try some local tile stores to see if they have small amounts of great tile at giveaway prices…it happens!

Thanks to BobF and k2 for your reponses. I’ve checked into the tile and there are some good prices available. Now if I can just install it properly! I’ll let you know how it comes out. Thanks again.
