we bought a house dating 1942 and it has coved ceilings-we knocked out the fireplace and need to fix that but I need to match the teture style on the walls and cant figure out what they did. I is not a swirl but a stick finger kind of look with flat spaces here and there. Its like they took mud and put a thin coat then put sticks or something on it and pulled it away then smacked the rough edges off. Have you seen or know of tools they used back then for things like that? Tara

applied the texture with some type of broom to give it that stick look effect….then may have take a wide blade putty knife and lightly knocked the high spots on the texture down. just a guess and something you might try to replicate the look. good luck LJ

The tools that could have been used are numerous. What you should do is try a few. Try a shag carpet, a broom, an ocean sponge or even some wadded up newspaper. Your guess on the proceedure is probably right. Possibly the tool was dipped in the mud and slapped on and pulled off. Timing is important; wait until the mud firms up some before you knock it down. If it gets too hard use more pressure. Experiment on some scraps of drywall. After you do a few tests you will figure out what works to get the right length and width and density of slaps. Are you trying to fix it with plaster or dryall mud?
