Our kitchen has oak cabinets that are almost twenty years old. The old stain is a pickled gray. Over the years they have yellowed. We have done all the preparations to start the staining process. However there is still some gray stain deep in the grain of the wood. We have tried several types of stain and the old gray stain keeps bleeding through. We thought if we could find a semi solid stain it may cover up the gray.
Painting the cabinets is our last resort. A good stain is so much nicer. The color we would like to use is oatmeal. wheat. or muslin. Any ideas?

I agree with you about not painting. Oak is a very porous wood and is hard to remove deep stains. I think your best bet is to use an ‘oxalic’ bleach remover to remove the previous stain/paint. It will go into the pores and ,I hope, remove what is there. Go to a paint supplier about the product. I don’t think a big box store can give you the infomation that you need.

Let us know how it works out.
