I looked for info on this subject. I want to stop hearing the kids next door crying. How do I sound proof or kill any sound passing through? I have an existing drywall wall that is probably not even insulated. I was thinking screwing a 1/2 inch ply onto the drywall and then rocking over the ply and finishing. PLEASE HELP. THANKS!

The joy of common walls! If you are willing to do drywall over the wall I would first fill the studs behind the existing drywall with insulation and see what improvement that gives.

What you suggest would help, but an even better solution (if you have room) would be to add another set of studs from floor to ceiling that do not touch the existing wall. The studs could even be installed sideways to minimize the space taken up. Then install fiberglass insulation (do not compress it too much) and follow up with 5/8 drywall and finishing.

Eliminating the contact between the two walls will help greatly.

      Good Luck!
