sofit venting

I have a house built in the 1800’s that I an remoldeling and had a question on venting the attic. The soffit is not boxed in like the new houses are and is built on top of the rafter tail, and at this time has no venting of any kind. I was wondering of any ideas on how to vent that. Maybe use the small 2″ vented circles in each bay, or would it need two. Or maybe the 5×10 square vent grills every couple feet, but this does not allow each bay to have air flow. Not sure what to do. Any idea??
