GuestI am starting to build a shed that is 12×8 using PT wood.
Since this is in hurricane area it needs to be strong.
So far I figure out the floor in which I am using 2×8’s
on 16″ centers. The joices will be cover with 3/4 PT
plywood On the corners 4×4’s will be cemented into the
ground. Now I need help with the walls/doors & roof.
I know I want to use 2×6’s on the walls so I can build
in a shelf or two. But I need some help with the rest?…
Thanks…. -

GuestThe dimesions of the lumber you use for the roof
is dependant on the pitch (rise/run) of your roof.
for say a 6/12 roof that has an 8′ span 2×6 should be
plenty. If you have never cut rafters before
spend $15.00 on a Stanley adj rafter guide. It
comes with an excellent pocket book on how to and
you can use it as a guide for dimensions of your
lumber. Another source is your local building
code.
Good Luck! -

GuestHi Darryl:
My most recent garden shed is a 10′ X 16′, from which I leaned a few things to pass on.2X6 walls 16″ OC are a bit much, IMO. 3 of my 4 walls have shelves/brackets for lumber, tools, hardware, etc. I did it by supporting the front of my shelves with 2X4’s or 2X2’s that go to the 3/4″ thick floor. 2X4″ walls should be fine while following Paul’s advice on rafters. I would also definitely install skylites or windows (if you have the wall space) for much needed light. Also, make sure to run a dedicated 20 amp circuit to the shop and allow plenty of headroom to move those long pieces of lumber around in. One other thing, make your door nice and wide. I made a 40″ door mounted with 3, 4″ hinges. Works great!
Best wishes
