I just moved to a new area and I see these PVC pipes sticking out of the ground. People tell me they are sewer vents. I have never heard of this before. I have never lived anywhere that had these. What the heck are they and why are they needed? Who would install them and where would I get info on particular vents?

      Thank you.

      G, Hi.

The idea of the vents is to stop back pressure forming
      in your pipe system underground.
It helps to stop waste water blowing back up the pipe
and help to stop smells coming from bathrooms/washbasins
normaly you do not smell anything because under the sink
and behind/under the toilet there is a pipe in the shape
of an S or a P this traps a little water and stops bad air
comming into the house, if you did not have the vent your
toilet would bubble and plop giving of a very very bad smell.
      Keep your vents open,

They are in the ground. I know about soil stacks in your house and traps in your plumbing. Of course, these are well known. I am talking about sewer vents coming out of the ground. These are in yards of people that have public sewer. I am no spring chicken and I have never seen these before.
