GuestI have 12×16 deck set on 4×4 posts on footings,2 of
footings are set on top of septic tank, I would like to
put roof over deck and screen in porch, alternative roof
types would be considered, Has anyone had experience
with ribbed colored fiberglass panels. I am in the
northeast with heavy snow loads. I do not know if
existing deck would hold conventional asphalt roof, any
suggestions would be appreciated -

GuestWe moved into a bi-level home with deck off kitchen on second floor… this deck was screened in plus the roof was ribbed colored fiberglass panels. We lived there 4 years, that roof had been there 8 years prior to our moving in and now 4 years later is
still there. Never a moments problem, this was in a suburb 15 miles south of the city of chicago, so snow was present and still no problems… go for it!

GuestDear Fred,
Two years ago, I built a large 35 x 12 ft. deck
with a 12 ft. section 15 ft. wide for a screened
porch. I really wanted a three season room but
didn’t think I could afford it at the time. My plan was to stick build the screen porch and add sliding windows at a later date. While attending a Home show, I visited a
number of companies offering pre-fab foam and aluminum panel 3 & 4 season rooms. I don’t know what kind of money you were planning to spend, but I would urge you to check this option out. The prices between different companies vary as much as $3000 for the same layout and,
from what I could see the same quality.A 12 x 15 3 season room, installed, ran $5000.
The job took only one day and the even ran wiring for outlets and a cieling fan at no extra charge. It’s been through a couple of tough winters with no problems.
Good Luck!

GuestI would like to put a roof over my deck. The deck is 12’x16′.Support post are 4×4.My house is a two story with a cantalever extendeing over the deck about foot and a half. The deck extends 12′ out from the house and 16’along the house. It has 3 support post.Is this enough to support a roof and do I need to change these to 6×6’s.Also what size roof raters do I need to use? Do I use the 1/4″ per foot for roof pitch? How do I attach the lumber that supports the roof rafters to the house and the support post. Thanks roofless in Arnold MO.
