replacing a thermostat

i just bought a fancy new electronic thermostat to replace my existing round one (gas fired hot air) after removing the casework and i can only see 2 wire connections (1 black/ 1white).. and neither have a letter etched near them..

any thoughts on which wire does what and if the 3rd wire that the instructions seem to imply might be a ground wire that just isnt on this old thermostat??

Try the website of the mfg of the new thremostat.

I installed a honeywell last year and their site was loaded with help – covered just about any type of wiring situation.
