I was quite ignorant:: when younger, I applied OLIVE OIL to a hope chest, to keep the wood from drying out. Now I want to refinish it. Sanding really doesn’t seem to be the best method–the grit is almost instantly clogged and the chest surface feels ‘tacky’ afterward.
I’ve had fleeting thoughts of trying paint thinner!??
Who has any ideas how to refinish the wood of the chest?? Due to its projected use, the intention is to use polyurethane.
      THANKS!

How about a thorough wipe-down with acetone or laquer thinner? (Then re-finish with poly if you want a gloss or satin finish.) If you want an oiled look, you could use tung oil which will dry properly, unlike the olive oil.
