I have attempted to remove what I thought was stain from my cabinets with BIX stripper, semi-paste and Citristrip paint and varnish stripping gel. No change!! Apparently there is some type of laminate or veneer on these old cupboards, and it will not be removed this way. Can anyone tell me how to strip these? Or, do I have to paint over it? I would prefer not to paint, but if that is my only option, then fine. Any suggestions on what type of paint to use? If you have any ideas and could respond via e-mail, it would be greatly appreciated. The building center I have gone to has been absolutely no help at all. Thanx much, Maryann

Have you thought about refacing the cabinets? This is surprisingly easy to do if you know how. I have recently written a book on the subject. You can check it out at my publisher’s web page. The Taunton Press http://www.taunton.com.

Look for “Refacing Cabinets: Making an Old Kitchen New”. It also applies to bathrooms. If you go to the web page, you can read the entire introduction of the book and that will give you a very good idea of what information is in it.

Refacing needn’t be an expensive option, especially if you do it yourself. And, like I said, it’s a surprisingly simple process.

      Good luck
