Some years ago we had a number of lines installed in our house to support a home office. That’s no longer in use, but we still have two active phone numbers. I’d like to get our kids’computer modem off our main house number. Without removing every single wire from the terminal blocks, is there a way I can figure out which is that particular jack’s line so I can switch it to the secondary number? Thanks in advance for any help.

Couldn’t you use your phone line to call his phone line? Then you could use a voltage tester to find which line has the ringing signal going into it. The one(s) with the pulsing voltage would be his line.

The 1st number will most likely be on the red/green pair. The 2nd number on the yellow/black pair. If the wiring is fairly new the 1st pair will be white/blue and the second will be white/orange. In most cases just reverse the connections in the jack. The jacks are wired: Line 1 green/red
      Line 2 yellow/black
Swap the wires that are connected to yellow/black
with the wires connected to green/red.

As lilricky said, 2 lines will use all 4 wires in a jack and each pair is the red/green and the yellow/black. Just remember that the pairs need to be swapped correctly. Each pair has a “ring” wire and a “tip” wire. The red and yellow corresponds to the ring wire and the green and black correspond to the tip wire.

In a 4-wire jack the center 2 wires are one line and the outside wires are the other. Since many single line phones come with cords that only have 2 wires(red and green) actually installed in the cord(look at the plug to see this), just plug a phone with a single line cord into each jack in the house and dial a number to see which line is using the center pair.

You could also plug a phone into the jacks on your side of the box outdoors and dial to see which pair is used(which is the first test phone repairman use to determine if a phone problem is on the phone company side or in the house so they know who pays, etc.) except remember that they should lead from the outside box to a junction box inside the house where all jacks in the various rooms are then wired into. Someone could also have alternated wires there to change on a jack which pair is line 1 or line 2.

So also check your junction box in the basement or whereever it is. Keep the same color coordination for each line.

I have two numbers and would like to change one of my jacks to the other number. The jack is currently wired red to red, green to green, the yellow black wires are in the jack but not connected. Can I disconnect the red/green and connect the yellow/black to the corresponding yellow/black connectors, or do I need to connect yellow/ black to the red/green for the jack to be switched to the 2nd number? Also there are three wires of each color, what does this mean opposed to only two?

I have 4 phone lines and when the first number is in use and a call comes in it jumpes to the next phone and so on. I would like to know how to stop the incoming call going to line 4. I would like only the first 3 lines to jump to the next line and not line 4.

      Any help is appreciated.
