GuestI know nothing about mitering mouldings and would like to learn how to do it. I’m mostly interested in mitering top mouldings–nothing fancy, just plain mouldings. Need simple, concise instructions. Appreciate any advice/tips. Will be using simple mitre box.

GuestDot, you can work with moldings using simple tools. I would think that your first order of business would be to go to the library or bookstore and get a book with plenty of pictures on how to do it. It just makes sense to describe a visual process with pictures. Then check the posts below as there are plenty of tips and techniques about moldings.
By the way, for outside corners, you miter. But for most inside corners, you cope. Coping is an offshoot process that starts with mitering then used a coping saw to complete the fit. I noticed Ryley doing one on one of Bob’s shows this weekend.

GuestI have a collins tool coping foot for my Makita power jigsaw and I saw a demonstration at a workshop on how to miter crown moulding, but somehow I can’t seem to do it like they did. I must be doing something wrong. Their instructions say miter the moulding 45 degrees, but I don’t understand if it is to be vertically mitered or obliquely…can someone help me. with a detailed explanation on how to fit the inside courners.
