I am getting ready to lay tile in my bathroom floor that previosly had vinyl flooring. What should I do about the toilet drain? It is screwed to the existing floor and, obviously glued to the piping so, I can’t raise it. Or can I?

What is the current relationship of the surface of the toilet flange and the current finished floor? If you don’t raise the surface of the floor too much in relation to the toilet flange, nothing extra needs to be done. If you increase the flooring level above the flange, you may need to use a thicker wax ring when re-setting the toilet.

When replacing vinyl flooring in your bathroom with tile, you may need to add a spacer on the drain to accommodate the extra thickness of the new flooring. Depending on the thickness of the new tile and the way the original drain was plumbed in, you can use a PVC Closet Flange Spacer Ring on the drain. This is a very easy install and will cost you under $10.00 to purchase from a local supplier. Remember you will also need a new wax ring and new Johnny bolts to reinstall the toilet.
