We’re expecting a new baby this Friday. While we prepared well ahead of time to buy everything for the room, we put off painting the room until two weekends ago. The first weekend I painted the entire room blue (latex semi-gloss). As it turns out, we screwed up by painting a broad horizontal red stripe (also latex semi-gloss) in the baby’s room that doesn’t match any of the red accent color in the bedding, fixtures or the carpet. Now we have 4 days to remove the stripe and repaint it with a new red color.

The problem appears to be that we painted directly onto the top of the base blue latex wall without any sanding or primer, so sanding it now produces a million little latex/rubber balls that clump and stick, rather than flake and fall. So removing this latex stripe is something like peeling latex underwear off of *** ****. Even the masking tape we used to mask the base paint rips the edges of the new latex stripe when it’s removed — even after 2 days of drying. You can easily scrape bits of the stripe off with your fingernail.

My only thought at this point is to go mideival on the stripe with heavy grit sandpaper, spackle the nicks and scrapes, sand again, prime it, paint it, and then buy some wood trim at Home Depot to cover the top and bottom edges of the stripe.

Any better (or quicker) ideas out there? In need of help soon…! Much thanks.

Basically your problem is that the deep red has too much pigment for the vehicle. It is going to take a long time to cure but it will eventually. I have seen this problem up close a couple times.
If you want a different color, you might be able to paint it on right now. Just don’t touch it for a few weeks!

Why not for now cover up the red paint with with a great looking bourder wall paper. Especially with baby coming home soon, you don’t want paint fumes haning around. Also how cold is the room because paint takes longer to dry when it cold. Try puting a heater in there to dry out the paint.

…let the paint dry for a few weeks, and then paint over the stripe when it’s fully cured.

Is there another room the baby can live in while you are repainting? It’ll only be for a couple of days.
