      Hello,

I am replacing the lighting in my bathroom and have run into a problem. There are two studs which run up the middle of the wall where I am hanging the light. When the house was built, the builder did not use junction boxes for the lighting, so I need to put one in. How do I do this with a stud in the way? I have been told I can notch out a portion of the stud, but is there any other way? Also, are there any smaller junction boxes than the typical size? I was hoping to notch out less. The problem is the light needs a little space behind it in order to be hung because it is stablized by a bolt going through the middle of it. This is probably confusing, but any advice would be greatly appreciated.

      Thanks

Yes they make smaller juction boxes for lights and ceiling fans. They are about 1/2 inch thick and are screwed to the ceiling joist like any regular j-box. They are readily available. Ace hardware, Home Depot, etc. carries them.

Let us know how it works out.
