I hate our huge in-ground swimmimg pool and I want to get rid of it and turn my backyard into a beautiful lawn. What should I fill it with?

The pool can be filled with rubble and compacted dirt AFTER the concrete is broken out. Since you hate the pool, you should like this part. You need to rent a jack hammer or hire a contractor to break up the pool, coping and any decks. dispose of the broken concrete in the basin then be sure all fill is compacted. Top off the fill with quality top soil. All electrical leads and plumbing connections need to be properly terminated. If you don’t break up the pool, you will create a marsh.

Here is SoCA you have to take out a demolition permit and at least punch a hole through the bottom of the pool to allow drainage. But if you want to make a “beautiful back yard” you will have to remove the pool and decking.

It may cost almost as much as installing a pool; not cheap!
