I have an older home with a second floor bedroom that is cantilevered out 22″ over the front of the first floor. The floor joists of the cantilever are hidden within the ceiling/roof of the front porch. We are removing the open front porch and replacing it with a glass enclosure (pre-fab kit). I need to install a new support underneath the outside edge of the cantilever which will span a 20 foot opening.
My question is what is required for support? Double? Triple? 2 x 10? 2 x 12? Since the span will be just over 20 feet is it better to use engineered materials?
Where can I find this info.
