      A hump in our dining room pine floors seems to be caused by cracked floor joists under our kitchen (which appears level but lower than the dining room). We need to address this before putting in new floors – how should cracked joists be repaired? Several have 6 inch long cracks where they meet the main support beam in our basement. Is this a serious structural problem or no big deal? The foundation and brick piers are in excellent shape.

      Sounds like you may need to sister the joists. Check out this video for a general example:
