I’m installing carpet with underpad in my basement on
the concrete floor. The house is only 2 years old and
the basement is very dry with no water problems. Should
I seal the floor before the carpet is installed? Or leave
      the concrete alone?

In my house I have put loose laid carpet directly
over the concrete floor with good results. I was
driven by the fact that my basement floods often
and that we use it only for storage. My son
carpeted his basement for recreation use and
carpeted over a product called Comfort Base. If
you are going to use the basement and live in
a cooler climate I highly recomment the Comfort
      Base.

Concrete lets moisture through and it can build up under your carpet creating a good place for molds and mildew. Call Basement Systems 1-800-541-0487 ask for Mark. He will be able to tell you about a product they have named ThermalDry. It will let your Carpet breathe and insulate between it and the concrete. your carpet willlast much longer and you’ll be more comfortable.

If the land around the house is well drain and the
house is high up, you might not need to do
anything to the floor. completely seal with tape
a piece of 12″ by 12″ plastic bag to the concrete
floor. After a couple of days, lift it up. If the
concrete is darker under the plastic, it means
that humidity is seeping trough the floor and it
is being trap under the plastic. If that is the
case, there are several products that come in
paint form that you can use to seal your floor.
Even though you are planing to cover it up with
carpet, you should look for one that is rated for
use in floors. A trip to your local hardware store
should provide you with brochures of several
      brands. Hope this helps.
