I want to finish part of my basement but there is mold growing in some spots. I have used bleach to remove the mold and then put a layer of a product called Kill, followed by a latex paint. This seems to work for about 6 monthes to a year. On one wall I put a layer of mortor over top of the block basement wall and there has been no mold growth in over 1 1/2 years. It is alot of work to put all that mortor on the wall, so I was wondering if anyone had any ideas that I haven’t tried, or if the mold will stop growing if I put up drywall.

      Thanks,
      Jason

Drywall will not stop the mold from growing. Besides getting rid of the present mold, get rid of the source of the mold to start with which is humidity and bacteria. You are probably looking at dehumidifiers or a energy recovery ventilator system that brings in outside air and exchanges it. What are your humidity levels and do you have any direct moisture coming in from your walls or floors? You may need some moisture proofer on the concrete. Also press control and f and do a search on all our prior posts on mold and mildew.

STOP! Do not! PLEASE… read! Lok up mold. Toxic mold. Black mold. Then consider ever thinking of placing drywall in your basement to block mold growth. Drywall, wood, paper backed material (ie: drywall and insulation) are all cellulos products. thus, promote the growth of molds/toxic and non, but can create mold spores to get in your basement and later air system. READ! RESEARCH. Consider Owens Cornings new Basement Finishing System FIRST!

We are building a new home an dhave had the crawl space insulated with spay foam. There is no in the house yet and we have mold on 1/2 of the walls in the crawl space. Will this go away when the house is done? Should we cover the pea gravel with plastic? How do we get rid of the mold that is there now?

My family and I have recently moved into a older home and would like make use of the basement. There are two sides to it and each side has a drain. I’m not sure where the moisture is coming from but I’m sure that the drains are part of it and then probably coming throught the walls themselves. Someone has previously put a type of mortor on the walls and some of it has broken away and you can see that the walls are basically completely covered with some type of mold. It is very dark but I’m not sure if it is the ever so famous Black Mold. I am looking for a way to rid of the mold, dry out the basement and sell up the walls from the inside. I would greatly apprieciate someones advice. Thanks

To kill mold do not use chlorine! Chlorine only lightens the color of molds, or at best only kills the current vegetation and not the spores which will grow back more vegetation. Use a ‘quat’ solution. Short for quaternium chloride. Short for 4 chemicals with real long boring names. Go to any restaurant supply company and they know what a quat is. Follow the label!!!

We were taking down an inside wall in the church basement. On one side of the wall is our dining hall, on the other side are two bathrooms. As we took the wall down a bucnh of dust was released and the three of us working immediately felt stinging in our eyes, nose and throat. We went outside and after 10 minutes or so the sensation went away. We sealed the hole in the wall, but noted much of the wood had disintigrated and there was blackish mold in several spots. What do you think the caustic dust represents and what should we do?
