My asphalt driveway is very old, cracked, and
has holes. Someone suggested to overlay the
existing with 1 1/2″ of asphalt. Is this a
good idea, or is someone trying to take me?

I am not a fan of asphalt driveways at all. The problem is the base under the asphalt. If you do not get a good crushed stone base under the asphalt it will not hold up.
you have them do a level up on the pot holes and they use a good tackifier between the old and the new. i do not prefer asphalt either due to the maintenance involved over concrete, but if it is done right and you use a good sealer every 2-3 years it will last for quit a while.
