adding sand to paint

I am faux finishing my home by painting a scene on the wall of the beach. I would like to add texture to the painted beach by adding sand in my paint. Is this okay to do, and if so how much sand should I add to a gallon and what kind?

And will quickly sink to the bottom of the paint. It is very difficult to work with. However, a special “Sand Finish Paint Additive” can be purchased at your paint store that is made for this purpose. It is light, and mixes with the paint well.
