what originally caused this chip? Is it a chip or a crack? Do you have the chipped piece?

granite chipping is quite unusual unless you have dropped something like a Calphon skillet or something.

I would contact or do a search on granite counter tops and find out how to properly fix this since its in a heavy traffic area. Someone out there has to have encountered this before and can assist you.
