You can paint it – I have done it – but it is not durable. It will scratch easily and would be hard to clean. The steps are: sand, prime, paint with oil enamel. At that point it is still very fragile, so you would have to clear coat it a couple layers. By the time you do all that, it is cheaper to replace it. Or if it is a flat surface, you could lay new formica over it.
