kids bed wood/paint? help!

I just bought the cutest maple wood headbord and footboard twin bed for my little girl. Do I try and refinish the wood? that scares me… it is pretty second hand and a mess right now. I don’t even know where to begin! Or do I primer it and paint it with girly colors? what kind of primer? what type of paint? any help would be great. thanks in advance! 🙂
