Installing ceramic tile flooring on slab foundation

I need to install a ceramic tile floor on a slab foundation that has been added on to. I have been told that the tile will crack if installed over the joint of the two slabs. I have also be told that there are materials that can be used as underlayment to prevent the cracking. Who is right, and if there is an underlayment material, what is it?
