counter tops

I was looking to paint my counter top something I had seen on Trading Spaces but unfortunatly I can not rememberhow it was done So I am maybe looking to put tiles on the counter top I am looking for color tiles mainly in a purple tone Right now I have a formica top Although if you can tell me how to paint a counter top I would rather go that route
