I think you are going to need a layer of plywood floor grade sheathing between the two. Hardwood flooring will expand/contract significantly but the plywood will be more stable.
The latest method (recommended by the Tile Council of America) is to set the backerboard in regular thinset but use latex modified thinset for the tile.
