carpet on hardwood floor

I need to remove a carpet and carpet pad from a hardwood floor. The carpet pad has been taped, glued and stapled to the floor. I do not wish to refinish the floor, but I want to remove the tape and glue residue, as well as parts of the pad that do not readily come up, without ruining the hardwood. Do you have any tips on products and/or techniques that I can employ?
