broken ceiling fan

Thanks for reply thiggy; Yes, it is a light & fan & definitely the power will remain off, thks; however, I have a few questions? When you say faulty chain switch & unsnap the chain, the chain was broken off inside! What is a knurled nut? The switch that holds the fan chain is black & has a few wires inserted inside. The fan has 4 speeds: off, slow, med, & fast. The black switch is closed with 2 not so normal looking screws? as for cutting it free, what then? How do I replace it & reconnect the fan speed wires? thks for your time!
