I took down a ceiling fan left by the previous owner and forgot to mark the configuration of the wires. There are two seperate circuits running into the box, one that runs from the main panel in the basement, through the switch in the room, to the box for the fan. The second, runs from a sub-panel in the attic to the box for the fan. How do I configure these wires? I followed a book and connected all three hots, the neutral from the switch to the blue in the ceiling fan (for the light), and the neutral from the attic to the neutral in the fan. This gets the light to work on the switch but the fan will only work when the light is out and even then it creates a light glow from the bulb. What’s up?

It would be highly unusual for two separate feeds to provide power to the fan/light……

I suspect you have a switch loop….White and Black wires attached to the switch…….(open the switch box and check for additional wires in the box…….)

The BlueFanWire is the HOT for the Light(not a neutral)……

The Fan and Light share the same neutral/white wire within the unit…….

Is a meter/tester available to check for continuity or voltage ?

Do you want the fan and light to be controlled by the wall switch together . . . or the light to be controlled by the wall switch and the fan by it’s chain?

For the former, you would connect both the black and blue wire from the fan to the hot from the switch, connect the white to neutral, and green to ground.

For the latter, connect the black wire from the fan to the hot from the attic junction, the blue from the fan to the hot from the switch, white to neutral, and green to ground.
